SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
The Government of Sri Lanka is negotiating a project loan with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for financing the proposed Sustainable Urban Development Project (SUDP), which is envisaged to enhance service delivery by providing priority infrastructure and institutional strengthening of selected cities Trincomalee, Dambulla, Kurunagela and Ratnapura of Sri Lanka. Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development is the executing agency (EA) and will implement the project through the Project Management Unit which is established under the Ministry and presently implementing the Strategic Cities Development Programme. (SCDP)
The rationale of the project is to develop cities outside Colombo with growth potential in priority economic corridors and important nodes across the country. The funding would provide for transformative investments to aim at creating livable prosperous communities that leverage industrial / economic linkages. The physical infrastructure interventions identified in SUDP is envisaged to facilitate and enhance economic development in the identified cities.
