The Strategic Development Program implemented under the Ministry of Megapolis & Western Development has commenced its development works in the following cities, Kandy, Galle, Jaffna and Anuradhapura. Under the Kandy City Development Project, Land Acquisition works have been completed for the development of the Katugasthota Madawala Digana road. Rs. 314.425 million has been paid as compensation and allowances for 991 plots of land under the LARC and the Super LARC methods. , The acquisition of these lands have been conducted by the Divisional Secretariats of Pathadumbara, Kundasale and Gangavatakoralaya as per the Land Acquisition Act No9 of 1950

The majority of project interventions are expected to create significant social impacts by improving the urban environment and livability of the targeted city regions. However, long term adverse impacts are likely due to land acquisition and resettlement in a few sub-projects involving certain new constructions for urban upgrading and road expansion. No indigenous communities are present in the project affected areas, as clarified by Social Assessment (SA) carried out.

As per the requirements of both state regulations and the World Bank’s Environmental Safeguard Policies the SCDP made several initiatives to enhance the quality of environment in several ways. Compensatory mechanism is applied to ensure the re-establishments of the green cover which damaged or removed due to project interventions.
